This Chocolate Banana Nice Cream is super healthy and ready in minutes! You’ll be hard pressed to tell the difference between this and the real thing.

I consider myself pretty healthy, but my husband takes it to an even higher level. He’s more of a au natural guy where I’ve still got a healthy amount (pun intended) of “if it comes from a box or can it’s all right with me” in me. Yes, I’m all about making things homemade as often as possible, but with so much keeping me busy, it’s not always a realistic goal. For example, as much fun as it is to make homemade ice cream, more times than not I throw my arms up and grab the Stonyfield from the freezer for me and the kids.

I don’t know if there’s something in the water or if a witch cast a spell on him, but my hubby has been diving in the kitchen more and more lately, coming up with a list of recipes that are actually really yummy! He’s been making this version of homemade ice cream that tastes unbelievably delicious, even to someone like me who wants the real deal.

Would you like to save this?
The kids certainly can’t tell the difference and hubby says if he didn’t know better, he wouldn’t be able to either — and this man knows his ice cream. But the best part is that instead of needing an ice cream maker or having to wait hours for the ice cream to freeze, his version is ready in less than a minute, is totally healthy and the kids love helping him make it!

Nice Cream is one of our favorite things to make in our house. When we’re craving something cold and creamy, especially when it gets warm outside, we switch off between this recipe and Rainbow Nice Cream, Green Nice Cream, and Coco-Blue Nice Cream! They’re all super easy to make and have ingredients that are actually good for you!

Chocolate Banana Nice Cream
Ingredients
- 6 frozen bananas, chopped
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup almond milk or milk of choice
Instructions
- Place all of the ingredients in a blender.
- Puree on a medium setting for 15-20 seconds, using the tamper of your blender to push down or stopping to push down with a spatula. You can this to be a fast process so the ice cream doesn’t melt.
- Scrape down the sides and puree again. Repeat the process until the mixture is smooth like frozen yogurt/ice cream.** Sprinkle with favorite toppings! ***
- Serve.****
- * Here’s a great way to freeze bananas! Place them in a Ziploc bag (make sure to lay the slices out flat in the bag when you freeze so they don’t stick together) and leave them in the freezer so you can always make this treat on a moment’s notice.
- ** Use the lowest setting to puree to avoid the ice cream from getting too loose and so it has more of a true ice cream texture.
- *** You can top with granola, hemp seeds, sprinkles, berries, chopped nuts, dye free chocolate candies and more.
- **** To make nice cream even more firm, place in a pyrex or baking dish and freeze for up to 3 hours to resemble ice cream.

This recipes is PERFECT for us since we are a dairy-free household. I simply substituted strained soy yogurt for the greek yogurt and used a bit more bananas and it came out perfect! My son and I were fighting over the bowl. I did a little stint a while ago with raw foods, and this is almost exactly how raw ice creams are made, using frozen bananas as a base. I’m definitely going to be experimenting with this one! Right now I’m thinking peanut butter and banana, or avocado….yummm! Thanks for all of your wonderful recipes and ideas! Can’t wait for the book!!
Avocado does work well to make it creamy, especially if you can’t eat bananas. just freeze into pops.
yummm!!!! maybe adding some avocado will make it creamier 🙂
can’t wait to try, can I use agave instead of the honey??
Can’t wait to try it on my toddler. The only dairy she will eat is chocolate ice cream I’ve been trying to find a way to get her to eat yogurt. For this one I think I’ll have to make it ahead and let her try it before she finds out there is yogurt in it. Thanks!
My husband said it took him one or two tries before he got a feel for how to thicken without pureeing. He said it’s important to pulse briefly, scrape down the sides and then pulse again, etc. so the consistency stays thick. You also may want to add a little extra banana. I’m going to revise the steps of the recipe. Thanks for the feedback.
P.S. If this doesn’t work, I’m totally blaming my husband. 🙂
I made this tonight and it was delicious! I added raspberries instead of strawberries and it was yummy but I think I liquified it too much-it felt more like pudding than ice cream. What’s the secret to thickening it and making it look just like the picture–real ice cream????
$20 a kilo!!!! My goodness. I’m sorry! This may be the time to just be like me and buy some ice cream!
Will have to wait til the price of bananas come down here in Australia …… we are still at $20 per kilo where I live 🙁 but frozen mixed berries will be nice as well .. thanks for a great recipe
what about avocado??
You can try a similar idea using frozen coconut milk. Good luck!
I don’t know what can replicate the creamy consistency of bananas for this recipe. Try this as a test: make some and just tell everyone it’s chocolate ice cream. See if anyone can tell there’s bananas in it. Then tell them afterwards.
Is there anything I could use to “thicken” it instead of Bananas? Unfortunately, my kiddoes (and hubby) won’t eat anything with bananas in it.
just made made this and i love it. i might have to make more because i don’t want to share with my husband or kids it’s so good!!!!!
perfect! I’ve been addicted to just plain frozen bananas turned into “ice cream” lately and this is a welcome chocolaty change. More bananas being sent to the freezer now.
Purée frozen bananas with some cinnamon and a bit if honey. Super low fat, healthy treat! My son thinks I’m letting him eat junk food fr breakfast on especially hot days!
The Magic Bullet is a great idea!
