When you have a baby you hope and expect that they will come out perfect in every way. You pray that everything you eat and do while your baby is in utero affects them in a positive way. I basically thought about this for 10 long months with each of my three pregnancies. I call these my crazy pants. I strap them on tight and don’t take them off until I’m holding my sweet babies in my arms.

With Kenya and Chloe I never had a day where I worried about them having food allergies as they never showed any signs of sensitives. I offered every food under the sun so they could enjoy a wide variety and they never had any reactions. With Gemma, though, it has been a different story. From the day she was born her skin was irritated and dry from eczema which was inevitably part of her diagnosis.

Would you like to save this?
We went to several allergists, I cut everything from dairy to gluten to sugar out of my diet for 5 long months. We finally discovered one of the causes being an egg allergy, but her eczema still hasn’t totally disappeared. There’s nothing more heart breaking than watching your child itch non stop whenever her clothes are off. Aside from changing my diet so my breastmilk is free of the foods we know are triggers, taking long warm baths and lubing her up with tons of moisturizing creams, there was little we could do to alleviate her pain.

We’ve always been conscious about the products we use in our home, but with anything that touches Gemma’s skin we have to be militant. We’ve always been big fan of the entire line of Seventh Generation products, but now with Gemma in diapers, using wipes on her skin several times a day and touching every surface around our home we’re even more aware. Watch this quick video to get even more ideas on how you can protect your children from pollutants, toxins and irritants and ideas of alleviating some of the possible causes of baby eczema in your home.

Both of my sons have eczema. We use Cetaphil Eczema Calming Body Moisturizer. I would love to try 7th Gen products!

Aww….so glad you’re figuring out her eczema triggers! I cannot imagine! I am a long time fan of Seventh Generation products–they’re eco-friendly products that actually work!
My little guy had eczema as a baby and Seventh Generation laundry detergent and wipes as well as warm baths and creams were a big part of our routine.
I have a toddler with eczema just started trying out 7th generation products I like them so far.
I have a baby with eczema as well. It is heart breaking. Looking forward to trying 7th Generation.
My daughter gets eczema on her little ankles, elbow creases, and behind the knees and it just kills me to watch her itch. I’ve tried multiple creams and shampoos. Waiting to wash her body and hair until the end of the bath and not putting any bubbles in the bath has helped a little but I am afraid she may have an allergy as well.
My youngest gets episodes of eczema and we are still figure out what causes it..when he has flare ups it really breaks my heart!
My daughter has occasional bouts of eczema. It was really bad until we took her for allergy testing, and determined she is allergic to egg whites and peanuts. After changing our whole family’s diet, she improved rapidly. She still has occasional flare-ups, so I slather her with Baby Cerave cream every morning and night to keep her skin moisturized.
My son also suffers from Eczema. Heartbreaking to see them suffer so young. Luckily his breakouts are smaller in scale now that he’s 6, but it still makes my heart hurt for him.
Great timing with a baby on the way. My first had some eczema patches until he was about two and we are lucky that they’ve mostly been kept at bay since then.
My 5 year old had really bad eczema until she was almost 3. Like you, I was only using natural products and was slathering her with different oils trying to find something that helped. It wasn’t until we found out about all of her food allergies that it got better (eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, mango, coconut). Her reaction to coconut on the skin test was more mild than the others, but that was the only allergen I hadn’t already pulled from her diet. After eliminating coconut it took some time but eventually it all cleared up and we haven’t had a flare-up since. It took awhile to catch all of the coconut in bath products, laundry detergent, etc since it’s under different names but once I did it made a huge difference!! I hope you can find Gemma’s trigger.
Have you tried Tubby Todd bath products? Look them up and read the founder’s story! It might help
My daughter MacKenzie, now 7, has had eczema all her life and as much as I try to relieve it nothing works! We use dye free and fragrance free products and no fabric softener even though we have hard water.. She has her own soap too! Every night and every morning I lather her up (with a fun massage) and she hates it. We have never tried strength seventh generation products but maybe it will work for her..
My oldest son, now 9, has dealt with eczema and multiple food allergies (eggs, dairy, nuts) since birth. Eczema is much better now, but still flares up. Have faith that Gemma may grow out of it over the next few years. We Use natural products, Bee cream from the farmers market, and experiment with foods all the time!! Good luck mama!
