When you have a baby you hope and expect that they will come out perfect in every way. You pray that everything you eat and do while your baby is in utero affects them in a positive way. I basically thought about this for 10 long months with each of my three pregnancies. I call these my crazy pants. I strap them on tight and don’t take them off until I’m holding my sweet babies in my arms.

With Kenya and Chloe I never had a day where I worried about them having food allergies as they never showed any signs of sensitives. I offered every food under the sun so they could enjoy a wide variety and they never had any reactions. With Gemma, though, it has been a different story. From the day she was born her skin was irritated and dry from eczema which was inevitably part of her diagnosis.

We went to several allergists, I cut everything from dairy to gluten to sugar out of my diet for 5 long months. We finally discovered one of the causes being an egg allergy, but her eczema still hasn’t totally disappeared. There’s nothing more heart breaking than watching your child itch non stop whenever her clothes are off. Aside from changing my diet so my breastmilk is free of the foods we know are triggers, taking long warm baths and lubing her up with tons of moisturizing creams, there was little we could do to alleviate her pain.

We’ve always been conscious about the products we use in our home, but with anything that touches Gemma’s skin we have to be militant. We’ve always been big fan of the entire line of Seventh Generation products, but now with Gemma in diapers, using wipes on her skin several times a day and touching every surface around our home we’re even more aware. Watch this quick video to get even more ideas on how you can protect your children from pollutants, toxins and irritants and ideas of alleviating some of the possible causes of baby eczema in your home.

Comments

  1. I haven’t actually tried Seventh Generation for my kids. Now I will! My thing is sunscreen for young, precious skin.
P.S. Your daughter is so cute!

  2. Your daughter is beautiful! We use a lot of Seventh Generation products because they are gentle on our skin. We love that it has no harsh chemicals. Thank you for sharing!

  3. I forgot to add….your daughter absolutely beautiful and looks so happy. I hope you can get all of her triggers under control. My son’s skin looks great as long as we are very disciplined with his diet and applying moisturizer.

  4. We use All free and clear laundry detergent. I like California baby super sensitive body wash and shampoo. We use vanicream lotion which isn’t as sticky and heavy as aquaphor.

My son also has an egg allergy that was directly linked to his eczema. He also is allergic to wheat and all nuts, so that eliminated a lot of body care products.

  5. Aquaphor has been a lifesaver for us – diaper cream, under-the-nose cream for those rough spots after a cold, dry skin…

  6. I’m dealing with an egg intolerance with my six-month-old too. And I’m still off dairy, soy, gluten, etc etc even though so far eggs are the only definite problem I know of. We’re dealing with some majorly stubborn dry skin by both elbows.

  7. I had my first eczema outbreak at 44 with my recent pregnancy. It’s watery itchy blisters all over my fingers. 🙁

  8. My niece has eczema and nothing seemed to help until we found Seventh Generation, it is wonderful.

  9. My oldest has always severely dry skin especially in the winter. I want to lather her in lotions but not in chemicals.

  10. I use non-perfumes detergents at all times to try to protect my daughters skin as best I can. And I adore Seventh Generation diapers and wipes!

  11. Two out of our three children had eczema to the point that we were going to a specialist for it. We tried many, many things. It is much better, but they still have some issues with it.

  12. My daughter has excess on her hand. At night we lather it with lotion and she sleeps with a glove on

  13. My two year old always has dry skin so we moisturize every night after tubby. I have another baby arriving in a few weeks and would love to try the Seventh Generation products on him or her!
